Here are some examples of sick and unnecessary deaths of octopuses and squids that happen in the thousands on a daily basis.

To Begin
Alot of people justify animal cruelty by stating that identical and worse things happen to them in Nature. This may be true but if we start comparing ourselves to animals, how are we different. Animals are not capable of thinking as we are, our intelligence and compassion is what separates us. I'd now like to quote someone who put this in better words:
“That's because it's an animal and, as far as any of us know, it doesn't have the degree of consciousness to be aware of and have compassion for the pain of another creature. Humans are supposed to be more evolved than that. Empathy and compassion are some of our most impressive traits, but rarely are those qualities tapped, it seems. I‘m not quite sure why so many humans have so little empathy, but our lack of it seems to be one of our most tenacious and potentially dangerous pitfalls.”
